Class Photos for the Class of 1960, Bernhard Moos E.S., Chicago, IL
Wayne J. Straight
Bernhard Moos Elementary School is located at 1711 N. California Ave. in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of West Town Community Area, Chicago, just up the road from Humboldt Park. Named after the fellow credited with creating the Chicago Public Library system, it’s been around since 1843—a number of my family have attended over the years, including my Mom—June C. Conrad/Gilloffo, my sister—Linda Straight, my cousin Joan Kosla and myself.
These photos follow the class of 1960 from 1st Grade in March 1953 to grade 8 in 1960 (minus grade 3 in 1955). I remember only a few of my class mates’ names so if you or someone you know attended Moos during the 50’s, please check them out and let me know whether you recognize anybody. Our first grade teacher was a Mrs. Spaulding; I believe that our 2nd or 3rd grade teacher was British; and I have fond memories of a very nice teacher named Miss Mix.
I’ve tried to catalog the students in each photo by row —those students I can (or think I can) identify are numbered (Note: most of the ident's are actually virtue of Marsha Krueger Bowers, and the most recent idents are courtesy of Carol Stasch--thanks ladies). But, since its been almost 50 years, my memory just isn't up to the task—I really need your help.
1953—1st Grade:
Unfortunately, I don’t remember any of the girls in the back row (typical for that age, I thought girls were yucky). However Linda Malecki (nee Falkenberg) recognized her sister 1--Jean Falkenberg. In the 3rd row I was able to identify: 2--Bobby Murdock, 3--Ralph Ipcinski, 4--Roger Dallam and, of course, 5--myself (aww, wasn’t I cute!). Second row is a bust--for the same reason as noted above. In the front row is 6--Terry Antisdel and 7--Jimmy Floore--a real scamp, he was a fixture during my entire time at Moos. Also, according to Jim Curtis, the 5th girl from the left in the 1st grade photo may be Norma Page.
1954—2nd Grade:
We did a little bit better this time. In the back row is 1--Janice Marek, 2--Jacky Koval, 3--Arleen Hoffman, and 4--Susan Schessler. In the 3rd row is, 5--Harold O'Shea, 6--possibly Terry Lattin, 7--Bob Brekhus, 8--Mike Murphy, 9--Gary Fuchs, and 10--me again. In the 2nd row is 11--Kathy Jacobs (by this time I was starting to get interested in girls and often pulled Kathy’s hair--she finally clocked me and that ended that), and 12--Lisa Madsen. In the front row, is from the left, 13--Mack Hudson, 14--Gunnar Killingstad, 15--Jim Worlbey, and 16--Bobby Murdock. A really nice guy, Gunnar moved soon afterward and I didn’t catch up with him again until High School--Willowbrook in Villa Park. Poor Bobby was being treated for ringworm at the time of this photo. Thanks to Kathy Jacobs, we now know that the girl sitting between her Lisa is Donna Lepkowski--thanks Kathy.

1955—3rd Grade:
I didn’t make it for the class photo in 1955--my little sister, Debbie, was born round about that time and I skipped some school to help out at home. If anybody has a copy of the 1955 photo I’d greatly appreciate receiving a copy.

In the back row are: 1--Janice Marek, 2--Jacky Koval, 3--Sofie Bara, 4--Susan Schessler, 5--possibly Donna Smith, and 6--Pam Scott. In the 2nd row are: 7--Jim Grabowy--a close personal friend, 8--Eddie Johnson--he was Maxine Johnson's brother and Marjorie Rush's cousin (Carol recalls that they often came to school with lipstick on their cheeks from where their mom kissed them), 9--Dan Gonzales--my bosom buddy (and the older brother of two other close friends, Tony and Gary), 10--me, and 11--Florian Poloff-- a real cut-up, he had a way of flopping down in our dinky desks in such a manner as to pop out most of the screws. In the 2nd row are 12--Irene Lotysz, 13--my unrequited love, Kathy Jacobs, 14--Linda Benson, and 15--Helen Zawlick. In the front row are 16--Terry Antisdel, 17--Jim Floore and 18--Bob Murdock. Kathy Jacobs aggain came through for the boy between Danny Gonzales and myself, his name is John Jergens.
